Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre
Flinders Ranges and Outback
From $27.00
The Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre is a museum with a difference.
Visitors can relive the glorious days of the Australian railways in Steamtown Peterborough, in the Southern Flinders Ranges, where Australia's most unique rail heritage centre is located. The Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre was one of the main sites for railway maintenance, repairs and a major rail-transport hub in South Australia in its heydays with over 100 trains passing through each day and employing over 1000 people.
The Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre is also home to South Australia's first and only sound and light show. This visual light and sound spectacle is presented after dark, while you sit in a comfortable 1916 historic rail carriage, now converted into a viewing car.
On the daily continuously guided 90 minute tour you can get close to historic locomotives, trains, carriages and numerous freight vehicles. You can still feel the glamour of the roaring twenties, travelling first class through the Nullarbor in the opulent 1923 First Class Lounge car.
Guided tours are between the hours of 9am to 3pm March to October. 10am to 12pm weekdays, 9am to 11am weekends, November to February.
Sound and light shows start after dark (7:30pm from April till October and 8:45pm from November till March). Bookings are essential AUD30.00 per person.
if you wish to go on tour, enclosed shoes are recommended.
